Our Region

The Central East Texas Alliance covers a territory spanning 10 counties and more than 8,000 square miles along the I-45 Corridor between the Dallas and Houston metro areas:

The people who live in our counties enjoy a rural lifestyle that includes tall trees, rolling hills, and wide open spaces. We offer abundant outdoor recreation opportunities, with several state parks, lakes, and hiking areas in our vicinity.

With the industry boom happening just south of our region (e.g. the Exxon Mobil campus consolidation and others), there are many people looking northward for places to live that offer less traffic, crowing, and noise and more open space and peace and quiet. With the influx of new residents comes an increased demand for high quality retail, a variety of restaurants, entertainment options, and gainful employment.

You can learn more about the needs and wants of rural residents by reading the results of the Texas Rural Survey that is conducted annually by the Center for Rural Studies at Sam Houston State University.

The counties that make up our alliance fall along the I45 corridor between the major metropolitan areas of Houston and Dallas. All of our counties are within driving distance (two hours or less) of downtown Houston, The Woodlands, and College Station, and are less than a half-day’s drive of Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio. Interstate 45 serves as an intermodal transportation route between the Port of Houston and Dallas, and there are numerous state highways and roads that carry cargo to Austin, San Antonio, and other cities to the west. Nearby airports include the George Bush International Airport, the Lone Star Executive Airport, and numerous municipal airports. Several of our counties are served by major railways, and railway spurs can be found in several of our member cities.

Residents of the Central East Texas area are loyal customers who are hard-working and innovative. Their spending power rivals that of more urban areas, and they appreciate goods and services that are high quality and sustainable. Our residents care about their environment, they support the businesses in their communities, and they pay attention to what is happening in the state and the counties around them.

The combined population of the Central East Texas region is 312,494. The average unemployment rate among the ten counties is 7.2%. The median household income in our ten counties ranges from $37,194 to $66,422.
